Reconstruction and Modeling of the Metabolism of Acinetobacter baumannii strain ATCC 17978 for Drug Target Prioritization

Acinetobacter baumannii is a gram-negative opportunistic human pathogen strongly associated with nosocomial infections that result in significant morbidity and mortality, especially in patients within intensive care units (ICUs). This bacteria is considered very resilient to environmental conditions and displays extensive antibiotic resistance across several strains, significantly restricting treatment options for patients. Because of that, the World Health Organization (WHO) considers the development of novel antimicrobial therapies targeting this organism to be a critical priority. In this regard, genome-scale metabolic models (GSMs) provide a systemic view of the selected target organism, allowing the prediction of phenotypic outcomes in response to environmental or genetic changes, as part of a methodology known as constraint-based modeling. In the present work, we reconstructed the metabolic network of A. baumannii strain ATCC 17978 and will make it completely available as a GSM specific to this organism.
