Numerical Flow Control
Tipo de evento: Seminário LNCC
Flow control arises in an increasing number of practical applications both in industry, earth sciences and the management of natural resources. In order to illustrate some of the most challenging issues arisingin this field, we address a classical optimal control problem ofinverse design, aiming to identify the initial source leading to a desired final configuration, in the context of hyperbolic or viscous conservation laws.First, in the one-dimensional case, we explain why classicalstrategies, based on linearization methods, fail, because of the lack of regularity of solutions. We then introduce an alternating descent method that exploits the generalized gradients that take into account the sensitivity of the smooth arcs of the solutions but also of shock locations. We compare the performance of the method with classical purely discrete strategies through various numerical experiments. We also address the multi-dimensional case where the geometriccomplexity of the problem increases, due to the need of localizingand perturbing shock curves and surfaces without introducing numerical instabilities. In the context of diffusive models we will highlight the extremesensitivity of inversion algorithms to the accuracy of the underlying numerical model, and in particular to the amount of artificial viscosity they might add.We will end pointing towards some perspectives of future development of the field. The talk will be based on joint work in collaboration with N.Allahverdi and A. Pozo (BCAM, Bilbao), C. Castro (UPM, Madrid), R. Lecaros (CMM-Chile) and F. Palacios (Stanford).
