Modeling the ecological competition between seaweed and seagrass in an aquatic environment: a case study

In the last decades, due to the high level of eutrophycation, the prevalence of few, more resistant, species of macroalgae caused many dystrophic events in the lagoon of Orbetello (Italy). Typical management options adopted, such as periodic algae removal or water movement, turn out to be very expensive. This motivates the study of alternative actions based on the analysis of coexistence of macroalgae (seeweed) and rooted plants (seagrass) in order to avoid any dominance. In this talk, we introduce a mathematical model of the seaweed-seagrass competitive dynamics. The model is identified by using real data and an analysis of the biological meaning of the estimeted parameters is carried out. Ecological restoration of the ecosystem is finally investigated by using the identified model.
